Fire Interruption Technology Keeps Flames Under Control in BC Basement Fire
Osoyoos, BC
October 2009
When Firefighters from the Osoyoos Fire Department arrived on scene of a basement fire, the house was filled with smoke, and flames had begun to spread from the basement to the main floor of the two-storey Osoyoos home. Fire Chief Rick Jones had one of his firefighters deploy the A device in the main level of the home to help control the fire, prevent further spread of flames to the main level, and buy time for crews to attack the seat of the fire in the basement.
The fire was likely caused by an open light bulb in the basement closet, where 3 mattresses were stored. The device deployed on the main level of the home, helped prevent the spread of flames to the main floor. Had Ara' device not been deployed, the fire with that much available fuel would have quickly spread to the main floor. By controlling the fire, Fire Interruption Technology made interior attack safer and bought time for crews to attack the seat of the fire in the basement.
“[Ara's device] performed as expected. I only wish we had another [Fire Interruption Technology] device to deploy in the basement to knock the fire down and prevent further spread of flames”, said Chief Jones.
13 out of the department’s 28 volunteer firefighters responded to the fire. While the structure is still in place and can be repaired, the home that belonged to a husband and wife and their 6 children is no longer inhabitable. The family is safe and no injuries were reported from the fire.
