Fire Interruption Technology Fights Ambulance Fire in New Jersey Firehouse
Mount Olive, NJ
January 2010
Firefighters from Flanders Fire Department used Ara Safety’s Fire Interruption Technology to knock down a fire that started in an ambulance located in the Flanders fire and rescue building.
The ambulance parked inside the firehouse garage erupted in flames at approximately 10:40 AM on January 28. No one was inside the garage at the time of the fire; however, two Flanders’ firefighters suffered smoke inhalation battling the flames.
Firefighters used Ara's device to knock down the fire and prevent spread of flames. Despite the large size of the bay and the amount of venting, Ara’s device knocked down the flames and bought time. Fire chief Fred Detoro said that Fire Interruption Technology would have knocked the fire out completely had there not been a ruptured oxygen line giving the flames greater intensity. Damage was largely contained to the ambulance, with no damage to neighboring vehicles.
The fire was determined to have originated in the area of the anti-lock braking system within the engine compartment.
