Fire Interruption Technology Buys Time and Contains New York Kitchen Fire
Mount Sinai, NY
January 2010
First on scene at a fully involved kitchen fire in a single story residence in Mount Sinai, New York, Assistant Chief Dave Taylor and Fire Chief Charles Poillon of Mount Sinai Fire Department, arrived to find heavy smoke coming out of the residence.
An occupant had just escaped the structure, when he informed Assistant Chief Taylor that he believed his grandson and two dogs were still inside the structure. Knowing that his first due engine was minutes away, Assistant Chief Taylor and Chief Charles Poillon made the decision to deploy the Fire Interruption Technology device through the front door in order to buy time and allow safer entry into the structure.
The first due engine arrived shortly after Ara’s device was deployed. The crew stretched lines to the front door and made an aggressive attack.
During overhaul, the crew found Ara’s device between the living room and the kitchen. Fire was contained to these two rooms. Ara’s device helped contain the fire and prevent spread of flames to other rooms in the house. With tremendous heat inside the structure, Ara’s device prevented a likely flashover situation.
Mount Sinai Fire Department later found that the occupant’s grandson had never been in the house and that both dogs made it out of the structure unharmed.
Mount Sinai Fire Department has not only replaced the deployed unit, but also requesting more units to place on their trucks.
